I believe the wire that supplies your amps with power is very important. That being said, yes, there are differences, but the differences between those two are subtle. Watch out for stuff like Hitron or other cheezy brands, their wire can sometimes be junk. Also, make sure you are not buying CCA (Copper Clad Aluminum), it should be marked either on the package or directly on the wire wether it's OFC (Oxygen Free Copper) or CCA.

The two you listed are both great brands. Also, look at KnuKonceptz for amp kits, they are great.

Kicker: I'm getting ready to buy some wiring for two amps... just wanted to make sure the above comment is correct because I checked out Knukoceptz and mostly found their kits to include CCA wiring. Thanks

Check out their Kolossus Flex line. That is all OFC, and some of the beefiest 1/0 AWG I have ever seen. I've got about twenty five feet of that in my car. I think it is the KLM line of their products that is CCA. (And it is clearly marked onthe wire).

Oh yeah, it's not that CCA wire is bad, in fact, depending on the application, it might be better for you. It is far cheaper, and the 1/0 can support loads of about 225 or 250 amps, whereas a 1/0 copper wire can take a little more than 300.

Ok. Thanks. I don't need to go crazy--only going to run two of those clearance Cadence amps for now (SQA-1 and -4)--had looked at using 4ga., but am thinking at least 2ga. now. Before it's ordered I'll probably go even bigger tho! \:p

If you have any thought of upgrading or running more amps at some point in your car. I recommend running at least 0/1ga to the rear of the car. It will have small enough voltage drop with a large amp load to run all future power needs from that wire.

it's cheaper to go with 1/0 right away. you may spend more at the onset, but once you buy 4, then 2 and then 1/0, you've spent double the money.

So if I'm gonna run two amps(one Mono and a 4-channel,900wRMS total) Would I run 2ga-4ga be good enough?

Check out this link. Ebay KnuKonceptz That's 20 feet of some of the beefiest 1/0 AWG wire. 68.00 + 8.50 shipping to Texas, shipping to Florida shouldn't be much different.

Scandal

http://www.westmarine.com/pdf/MarineWire.pdf

It took a few to figure out how to read each chart, but this is among the best sources i've seen to determine what gauge wire to use.

As you can see at the 3% chart if you're running 900RMS. I'm guessing this more important number of 100 amps. That would be the total your amps are fused at. You would almost never be able to sustain a load bigger than 60-65A given the amplifiers. From there I'm again guessing you're running the wires 20' to the back of the car. You need to look at the round-trip of the wires on this chart. I assume that means you would effectively have to double the distance. So for 40' at 65A at 3% voltage drop you would want 0GA or 1GA. This would be for minimum voltage drop. Almost everyone goes on the short end of these charts. You could use 2GA but there would be a noticeable difference from voltage at the battery to voltage at the amplifier. 12V is terribly inefficient for large loads at distance even as short at 20'.

For example my amplifiers are fused at 150A total and I've run 1/0 to the rear of the car. Also if you go with wires that big, they are tricky to hide inside the car. With the wire cover it's better than 3/4" in diameter. This wire gauge has a max of 285A but would show signs of voltage drop with a constant 150A load. I likely see no more than 100-110A total draw even at maximum volume.

Hope this helps.

Good info guys... thanks. I've pretty much decided to just go with 1/0 myself to the rear and then a 1/0 to 4 ga. distro block...

Been looking at this 1/0:

Look halfway decent or something to stay away from?

try it out. it is pretty cheap so it's not a huge investment if it isn't very good. that site also had some rockford 1/0 listed. i would probably go the RF over the other kind.

Honda I did the same thing running the 1/0 to the rear and splitting it through 2GA and 4GA distribution blocks. I see no voltage drop at either of the amps.

That's good news! I'm going to upgrade my grounds before I even attempt to power my amps for sure. That should help too.

Well I finally planned out my power scheme and am shopping now (well researching). I know it's nothing fancy but I figured I'd post the planned schematic:

Make sure that that distribution block on the power wire is a fused one. Any time you step down wire size, you want to fuse. Otherwise, any part of the wire from the distribution block to the next fuse is a fire hazard. Also, this will save you from needing those individual fuse holders for each amp, since the fuse will be incorporated into the distribution block.

^agreed.

also, show the ground wiring at the battery to both chassis and engine block. nice diagram.

OK. Good info! Can I really still get rid of the individual fuse holders (which I dislike aesthetically) since the amps came with them and have no internal fuses?

If you get a distribution block that has fuses in it, you can certainly ditch the inline fuses before the amp.

Just received a Kicker PKD1 kit. Looks like a good quality setup. 0/1 wire, two distro blocks, and 4 ga. to dual amps. I also got a fused Kicker distro block coming separately as recommended.
