Ok, we have 18 days until we have to be in Tulsa, Oklahoma for the Tulsa Invitional event. For those that are not familiar with this show it breaks down like this:
On saturday the August 30th there will be a regionals USACI soundoff. The top three cars in each SQ class will receive an automatic bid to Finals.
The top car in each sq class will receive an automatic bid to the $10,000 dollar money round. Now that leaves 21 open spots. Those spots were allowed to be pre-registered by anyone.
The rules for the event will be as follows. There will be pairs of judges that will each judge the 30 entries. The high and low score will be thrown out and the remaining two scores will be averaged. This will be sound only, no install. The sound rules and sheet will be based on IASCA sound rules and the ultimate sq sheet. The money round will be sanctioned by IASCA. If you compete in this round you will be able to compete at the IASCA finals as well.
The music will be decided by the judges prior to the event. They will be picking 15 songs that will be pressed onto 30 CD's (by the judges in the highest quality available) and given to the 30 competitors prior to the show. There will be some traditional SQ tunes as well as some real world music, and no genre will be excluded. The thought is that the best sounding system should sound good on any music, no matter the genre choosen.
The judges are (as of the last I heard):
James Feltenberger Nick Wingate Dale Fontenote Doug Winker Chris and Melissa Owens Mickey Brones Lee Teeples
Prize money break down:
1st $4000 2nd $2500 3rd $1750 4th $1000 5th $750
Ok that's the show. As of right now, Team Sounddomain members Andy Jones, Rick Sellers and possibly Ben Vollomer will be competing at the event. Jonathan has a MECA show in Tennessee that weekend he will be attending, so he can participate in this post to show a contrast of ways people get ready for different events. Unfortunately Robert has to work that weekend and will not be able to go. He hopefully will be part of my preparation for the event.
Also going along with us to the event is Jack, shop manager of a SoundsGreat here in Tuscaloosa.
I'm going to use this thread as a daily "blog" of types of getting ready for the event. Follow along, ask questions, participate how you wish. Hopefully the other guys will step in and post also.
Here are a list of competitors who have signed up for the event: Andy Jones Rick Sellers Steve Head X2 Ben Volmer Adam Pate Jan Bennett Roland Froboese Lou Le Matt Roberts David Seal Kirk Proffitt Wayne Watkins Ron Baker Jack Everret George Saltzman Chad Greer John K Roberts Gerald Niebur Mark Eldridge Marquies Weaver John Marsh Jorge Juaristi Boomer's Audio Mike Hudson Larry Stevens Gary Summers Lee Chavers Anthony Davis Gary Biggs (new car?????not the regal) Sherrill Roberts Robert Petty Matt Hall James Risenhoover Jason Syner Alex Mendoza

As of today my car is in Atlanta at Sounds Sensations having some final touches done to the install. I will pick it up on Saturday at noon. Between now and Saturday I will be working on Jack's car getting it ready, and I will be preparing for the trip (hotels, itineraries, install books, etc.).
I will also be borrowing someone else's *coughSamcough* Altima to make some templates for some underdash panels and possibly one more item I need to build.
I'm taking my 2007 Nissan Altima to the show. The equipment looks like this after the rebuild:
Pioneer ODR RS D7xII Headunit Pioneer ODR P70xII Processor Genesis Dual Mono Extreme Amps x4 Genesis Absolute 7" Midbass The Autophile 3" midrange/tweet point source driver Image Dynamics IDQV3 10's Second Skin Deadener and Foams PowerMaster Battery Hooker Audio Wiring
For those that followed my build thread, you will notice that only the subs, amps, wiring and battery are the same. I will be doing a big write up on the deadener changes soon, as well as the entire build. there was a lot of testing went on before the changes were made. I hope they move the car forward.

Last night was spent doing some planning and buying a pop up tent.
We will be in Tulsa, OK in August. I'm betting it will be a wwwwwweeeeeeeeee bit warm. My old tent broke recently, so I bought this one:

Sadly that is so the car can park under it and stay cool for judges and not for me to stay under. Hopefully Ben and Rick have one also. Three tents right next to each other help out tremendously.
Also we are working on logistics. I live in Tuscaloosa, AL; Ben lives in Atlanta and Rick lives in Jackson, MS. We are leaving on Wednesday to attend a SQ seminar put on by Mark Eldridge on Thursday and Friday. We are trying to figure out where to meet and how to get there. We have basically two routes---one goes through Memphis and on to Tulsa. The other through Shreveport and on to Tulsa.
I also looked at Hotels last night. looking for cheap but safe. I realized I have a friend who just moved from tusla to Tuscaloosa. So I'm getting with her soon to go over the areas the hotels are in to make sure we wake up and at least 2 of our 3 cars will still be in the parking lot.
Tonight, we work on jack's car. It had a set back and some equipment changes, so we have a LOT of work to do in a short period of time.

The road has hit some speedbumps along the way.
In Jack's car we had a "slight" equipment change. It now looks like this: Alpine D100 HU Alpine H701 Processor Audison Amps (4 of them--I'll let him give model numbers) MB Quart 12" subs Focal KP 6 1/2 middbass drivers Pioneer PRS 5 1/4" midrange drivers Tweeters--Focal KP tweeters Wiring: Stinger and JL Audio Battery: Kinetik Sound deadening: Dynamat, Stinger and Second Skin
His car played music on Sunday night. Now we will tune and work on cosmetics going forward. all speakers play, no noise, and it didn't make me want to punch a puppy, so that was a good start. We can go from there. Should be a good system when everything gets dialed in. Definitely some detail in the upper midrange/tweet area that was nice to hear. Subbass is--wow. I haven't turned down subs that far in a long time. Midbass is good. Midrange is nice also. needs some help imaging and on focus. This is all with no time alignment,no eq. Just very rough crossover points. Car should be good.
My car the kickpanels are incredible. Completely better in all aspects of how that car sounds. Working on some midrange issues now but should have that done in the next few days. I also finally figured out how to tune with the ODR HU. Thanks to Keith Turner and Jeff Smith for showing me how to work that thing. Big thanks to Keith for showing me how to set the clock and stop the background from changing colors every 10 seconds.
This week we will spend getting junk together and tuning cars. Hopefully we will have some pictures for everybody soon.
Can you feel the pressure building
From Sounddomain we will have myself, Rick Sellers, jack (jacksonp) and Ben Vollomer making the trip. Ben will not be competing. He is going along to pay for meals for the rest of us

I'd switch to Zapco amps first (this is purely a joke and nothing more for those that don't know me).
I'll be in Memphis on Wednesday (next week) . Ben Vollomer and myself are getting to town early enough to eat some BBQ before heading out to Tulsa for Mark's seminar and the show. Where is your shop in relation to Beale Street--can we swing by?

Andy, Thought I would fill in a few blanks.
Hu: Alpine Iva-D105 also with Alpine Optical Changer amps: Audison Three lrx 4/300 and one lrx 1/400
Also I found a few "hidden gems" in our Birmingham store last night. Picking up a few try outs if all else fails, including some "new" Quart and alpine mids I didnt know we had.
Robert stoped by yesterday and discovered the kick mids were reversed, after that I removed the phase reversals and WOW! you gotta hear it now. Even with NO tuning whatsoever.
Still want to give props to roberts ability to run that suitcase he calls a meter.
I will be driving out on Friday, and i've never been to Memphis either, so BBQ is definatly on the stop and get on the way list.
See you all there.

Last few days have been spent slacking. Not really doing anything of any real importance. Reserved our hotel rooms, paid for Mark's seminar, and been thinking about a display for the USACi portion of the show.
Tonight I believe we are working on tuning Jack's car. I may also start to work on my display for the show--though I'm still not sure what I want to do.
Hopefully I get my car back either tomorrow or Saturday morning. There will be a lot of action going forward at that point.

Last night we worked on Jack's car.
We did some listening and realized we had something set up wrong. So we had to redo some wiring on the Audison amps. The Audison owner's manual---it might as well be written in greek with pictures of alpine amps in it. Completely unhelpful in setting up that amp. After a while Robert got it figured out (that would be the green piece of paper---the drawings of how the amp worked, and where to set all of the switches to bypass everything)

This gives you a rough overview of the stripped down trunk.

RTA setting on hood of vehicle for easy viewing while tuning. Easy until you get sleepy, and then all numbers and dots blur

Overall the car is coming together nicely. Midbass is strong. Midrange and tweets are doing a good job. Not bad for the initial set up. Car should be good to go in a few days.
Sorry for only 3 pictures. My camera died at that point.
I think tonight will be spent on install books and getting my tools together for the show.

I'm getting really close to being done. I've got to put in the new midbasses and see how they do. If I like 'em, I gotta pull my sheet of MDF off and put some overkill between that and the window motor assembly. Then I've just got cosmetics to worry about.
I finally got the Dyns kicking but it still isn't enough.
