OK, building speakers is definitely a cool project, but what's up with putting straws in your port???

OK, I read a little deeper rather just looking at the pretty pictures and found this:
"There's an odd bit of business in the kit's instructions about filling the rear-firing port tube with several dozen plastic straws that confused me at first, but a call to North Creek revealed that the straws help fine-tune the speaker's low-end bass limit."

So the straws act as a subsonic filter?

did you see the Mythbusters episode where they made a wind tunnel by putting thousands of bundles of straws in front of a fan? it helped direct the air and reduce turbulence, if i recall. i suppose it would do the same thing but should your port calculation be adjusted to include a large number of long, small diameter ports?

maybe a large number if small diameter ports resists air flow at subsonic frequencies, i'm just guessing here without actually looking for information to back that up.

i guess the fastest evaluation would be to do a couple plots in bassbox or some other sub box software.

I don't see why this is used. Shapes like this are used to keep a fluid laminar (non-turbulent). I think the effects might be negated by the opportunity for whistle around each edge, but I dunno \:confused\:

I might try it in my Focal 5Ws box. It has a bit of port noise, so maybe this will help? Worth a shot. I woudl think that that many straws woudl change the parameters even though they are really thin.

I wouldn't do it, you are just introducing more edges for localized airspeed to increase (whistling).
