I was looking at the Alpine iDA-X200 at Best Buy, I like the style. Bluetooth definitely doesn't work (iPhone's fault, so that's an issue with all HUs), so I'm left with either the newer iPod cable or the old style, not sure what the real difference is.

I guess the new one probably won't work because the iPhone isn't in iPod "mode" all the time, but they said the older one should work.

Should doesn't sell me, so I want to know if it is compatible, and whether it's the best route, or if Pioneer or Kenwood have better solutions. The deck and cable would be $230, so that's the deal I have to break.

I read a review on Crutchfield that the Pioneer DEH-P5000UB is compatible with the iPhone, the Pioneer uses a USB cable just like the stock iPhone one.

Here's what Alpine printed in the manuals of Ipod/Iphone compatable Head Units. This is using the High speed cable from Alpine.

What shall I expect when I connect an iPhone to my Alpine head unit?
For iPhone Users:
A message will be displayed on the iPhone whenever it is plugged in to an Alpine product via Full Speed iPod cable. This is a normal iPhone function, and neither the iPhone nor the Alpine unit will be damaged by this connection. If you do not turn "ON" airplane mode, you may hear radio interference through your sound system.

Reference: From the iPhone User Manual
If the iPhone shows a message saying "This accessory is not made to work with iPhone".
If you connect iPhone to an accessory not specifically made for it, iPhone may ask if you want to turn "ON" airplane mode. This is to eliminate radio interference from cellular signals coming from iPhone. You may be able to use iPhone with the accessory whether or not you turn "ON" airplane mode. If you turn "ON" airplane mode, you won't be able to make calls, send or receive text messages, access the internet. or use Bluetooth devices with iPhone until you disconnect iPhone from the accessory or turn off airplane mode.

Ya, I read that about the Alpine one, which means it probably only works with the "high speed" deck. The Pioneer seems more promising. The chat rep from Crutchfield said it works with newer iPods, which usually means it works with the iPhone.

I had heard the Pioneer units had a better iPhone interface. I have no proof, just read some reviews.

I sent an email to Pioneer about it. If I end up getting it, I'll be sure to update you guys.

I recently purchased the deh-p5000ub at walmart after it went on clearance for $100. It works great...SOMETIMES. I can't figure it out. It gives the message that "This accessory is not made to work with iPhone 3g," and I say no. It continues to work fine. BUT sometimes when I plug it in, it continually connects then unconnects then connects then unconnects...you get the idea. I've had about a 50% success rate with it working. I've tried plugging it in with airplane mode turned on. I've tried plugging it in when the vehicle is turned off and only accessories running. I've tried switching sources first. I've tried everything off the top of my head to get it working. No such luck. I thought perhaps the USB had a short in it, but my flash drive shows up immidiately. I will say this. When it is plugged in and working, it works flawlessly. It charges and cycling through the folders and songs is possible. Please, let me know if you have a better experience.

Interesting, I do know the iPhone 3G is slightly different when it comes to the connection, so maybe that's the issue? I sure hope it works. Pioneer just responded, they told me to call...they emailed me 5 minutes after the damn call center closes. Needless to say I sent back a frustrated reply.

I'm not sure what's so difficult about "does it work or not".

Either way, I won't know till Saturday at the earliest.

It is a bit different. I know of two generic charges I had that worked with the 1st gen iPhone that don't work with the 3g. I did not test the 1st gen with the pioneer, though. I've been reading the optional pioneer iPod adapter has better luck with the iPhone, so I may take that route. Although, I don't really want to.

It seems I may have found the issue and quite possibly the solution. It appears that the pioneer will only recognize and play from the iPhone when the iPhone has close to a full charge. This may be due to the iphone's priority of checks when first attached. Example: if < 75% charge begin charging THEN accept accessory requests. The pioneer may not have this "begin charging" check delay built in. Anyway...I'll keep you up to date on my findings. I think you should be happy with both the pioneer and iPhone though. \:\)
