my parents are redoing our house and i've convinced them that we need to get some surround sound throughout the house. so i have wired up and put speakers in the den kitchen living and dining rooms and a bunch outside by the pool. so right now we've got some denon receivers hooked up. and i told them we should get this sonos system to control it all. it works by putting evertything on the computer and these sonos boxes hook into wirelessly. i was just wondering if anyone had heard anything about it or had any experience with it before i get it. i want to make sure it works well and the display they have at best buy never works. so has anyone heard of this or any alternatives. heres a link.

did you read my sticky on whole house sound? how you wire the house for sound determines what your options are.
Distributed Home Audio

let me know what you think of it. it's a neat idea if sound quality and reliability are not compromised. i always prefer hard wired connections for audio, but this is something unique. i looked at the data sheets, but not the installation sheets yet.

i'm currently designing a multi-room system for my in-laws. minimum 4 source 6 zone.
probably this

so how did you run your speaker wire. for Sonos to work you need to just wire locally, correct? how many rooms and how many speakers are wired? where are the wires routed to? how many sources, how many zones, how many remotes do you want?

ya all local wiring. you just need to connect an ethernet cable from your router to one of the boxes and then it will send the signal to all the other boxes. i've got 2 speakers in the den, 4 in the kitchen-those are hooked up to a reciever and the sonos box is hooked up to the receiver. the receiver is located in the den so i had to run some wires under the house to go over to the kitchen. the way its set up. i got a denon receiver and i have the kitchen as the A/B speakers on the main zone and the den is Zone 2 on the reciever. then there are 2 speakers in the living room and two in the dining room, they adjoin. those are hooked directly into a sonos box. this box is different from the one in the den and it has speaker outputs in the back, so those 4 are wired directly no receiver. thats all for inside then we have 6 speakers by the pool and on the porch 2 rocks by the pool and 4 on the back porch. i ran those wires in conduit underground and brought them into our poolhouse. so there is a reciever in there and a sonos box with rca outputs.
so that is how everything is setup.
the only problem i'm having is that the receiver outside keeps shutting off. now my dad said it was probly getting too hot cause it is outside, and that may be it, but it mainly turns off when the volume is turned up, but its not very loud only -20db and sometimes it will shut off before that. idk.

do you have impedance matching speaker selectors or a impedance matching volume control for them? the receiver will start to shut down with 4-6 ohm loads or lower.

sounds like a cool setup.

there is a little switch i noticed on the volume control A/B/C/D it is something for setting what ohm speakers your using could this fix it or do i need to get rid of them or get different ones.

you'll have to refer to the manual for the volume control settings and wiring diagram.

you need impedance matching volume controls to ensure the amplifier sees a proper load. your issue is probably with how they are set. if memory serves (i always refer to wiring diagrams first) you total the number of speakers you are connecting to the amplifier. all of the volume controls are set to that number (regardless of how many are on an individual control). all of the volume controls are then ran in parallel.

improper wiring can cause connected equipment to fail.

i'll always draw a diagram of how i'm going to wire something first. then i can double check with the diagram before i power up. that way everything works perfectly the first time (unless something is DOA).
