I am installing a car radio in my boat and the color of the wiring is slightly different from the 10 year old marine radio that it is replacing. The wire colors - other than speakers - from the old (clarion) radio were red (power), yellow (battery) black (ground) and blue/white (amp turn on lead). In the Pioneer I am installing the wiring is the same cept the wire collors are red, yellow, black and orange/white (and the manual says it's for the lighting switch terminal).

So, do I use the orange/white from the new radio where the blue/white went with the old radio? Or do I need to get a marine radio (the boat is not used in salt water).

thx

The orange/white is for illumination control. Do not use it in place of where the Blue/white was. Marine radios are usually sealed a little better to keep moisture out. People use standard car audio units, but I'm not sure how well they will hold up if it gets water splashed on it. If you have amps on the boat, you are going to need a "amp turn on lead" like the old unit had or you will have to hook the amp turn on to a switched acc. power.

as long as you have the radio in a place that is away from splash or you have a marine cover on it, you will be fine. there should be a blue/white wire on the pioneer. The harnesses are very different for clarion and pioneer

hell, we had a new Sony "marine" unit that got damaged even with a marine flip cover. apparently the faceplate isn't "marine" and the buttons lost their contact patch. stupid sony. We use a normal Alpine 78 series and haven't had any issues for several years - also, he bought a grill cover for his console ;\) to ensure things stay dry.
