Hey everyone, Just wanted to know if it is a good idea or if it's necessary to run a relay when hooking up remote wires to multiple amplifiers. I plan on adding another amplifier to my system for my components I plan on adding. I'm currently running two Alpine PDX 1.600 amps and I plan on adding an Alpine PDX 4.100. So is it necessary to add a relay on the remote wire with this setup?

i would just to be safe. different amplifiers pull different amounts of current for the remote turn on. You're safe with two, but I'd add one if you're running three. The upside to that is you've also just opened yourself up to being able to hook up a couple of fans without problems as well.

its really not needed... i have 3 amps running off of my one remote wire, works great. the amps don't use any of the power from it ,its just a switch....nice set up by the way...i love stinger, and alpine, but i never was too much of a fan of their amps for some reason

the amps do draw power from the remote turn on. they are a load and that load has current draw - feel free to measure it with a DMM. as you add more amplifiers the current will double each time. how many amplifiers you can use on one remote turn on signal depends on the HU and how it was designed - some are 0.5A some are 1.0A some are 0.3A. If the manual doesn't say how many you can connect, assume two is safe, three is borderline, and four is probably a bad idea. a relay is always the safe bet - all the amps will be triggered on the relay - so the remote only sees the load of the relay coil. your remote wire should have a fuse sized per the manufacturer.

Are you saying that you have to fuse the remote wire? Or are you saying only when you hook it up to a relay like that?

the remote wire should always be fused at the HU IMO. while a short won't cause a fired hazard, it will damage the HU.

I wasn't saying it's a bad idea or anything like that... On the contrary, I would believe Richard over most people when it comes to anything that has to do with electricity. I'm just saying that I had never heard of that.

fuse any wire that could cause a fire or do damage if it is shorted out. fuse it at the source or at a tap.

I would flip the 30 and the 87 in that... I prefer not to have the 87a powered at rest

my 3 fared cap has a remote wire distribution block on it ....there are 4 slots...no perticular in or out, it is just a block connecting them together, i am assuming that it is ok to have 3 amps on one remote wire because of this....im running an alpine cda 9856 and every thing turns on perfectly ....so.........

I'm at a lost. Is it alright to run 2 to 3 different remote wires off the back of the deck? If not give me some more details about running the remote wire. What does the remote aactually do? I'm looking into brushing up more on my car audio lingo... thanks

googled this

http://www.mp3car.com/wiki/index.php/Wire_an_amp

There's your basics.

And yes, that would allow the possibility of a turn-on pop. You would want to wire in a delay if your HU doesn't already have one. Also if you don't just wait until your cars on for 5-10 seconds before turning on the stereo. That should at least help.

so if your using just two amps, all you need is a fuse at the remote wire? and if so, how do you determine how big the fuse should be?

sized for the maximum current output from the head unit. the owner's manual should say something. between 0.5-1.0 amps.

The manual doesnt say...

it has power supply requirements: dc 12volts, negative ground.
max power output: 4 x 80 watts
current drain: 15 amps max.
