What do you guys think of the Clarion MCD360 crossover?
It says it can be used in a 3 way - tweeter, mid, sub - BUT it only has low pass switches for the sub.

Do these typically low pass the mid at the tweeter high pass frequency?

Thanks for any help you can offer. \:\)

Also - is this going to hurt SQ at all? Should i just design a proper passive crossover instead?

I would spend that money on a HU that will do active X-over. That's just me though. I really prefer the flexibility of a full active X-over such as the Alpine PXA-H701.

If you have the knowledge and ability to make your own passive set, go for it. That way you are not locked in to what the Clarion settings are. Passive networks do leech power from your amp, not a lot but something to consider.

That clarion is a fully adjustable electronic crossover with three inputs and three outputs. It looks like it will only high pass the front and rear (or high and mid) outputs. I don't see anywhere in the owners manual where it says the mid can be low pass. They intend on it being used as front and rear, not necessarily mid and high due to the lack of a mid bandpass channel.

For the low pass on the mid you can use the amp crossover (but most amp crossovers don't have a low pass above 2kHz).

Or you could use a passive crossover just for the mid lowpass - like an inductor. You would lose any tuning as Robert mentions however.

Spend the money on a good flexible crossover. With the right flexibility you can achieve tremendous results without ever getting to an EQ.

Thanks for all your help.

I think for now I'll just design a high quality passive network. I'll purchase the active set up in the next month or two - when I purchase another, larger midbass speaker. I've spent a bit much this month so a high quality passive set is a little under $100 which is much better than another 600 / 700$ right now.

Although I'm open to suggestions as far as a nice 3 way active set up.

So far I have on my list to look at : The alpine that was mentioned above.

Why do you need a crossover when it has one built in?

are you talking about an electronic crossover? more than just high or low pass below 400Hz?

there have been some posts on that in Sound Shaping

^if you are going to spend what that thing cost, I'd step on up to the 701 so that you have phase control of each speaker and time alignment.

I have no idea how in today's market Audio Control can not have a single processor with time alignment in it. Amazing.

i dug around for a long time when trying to decide on a processor. i wanted to get the audiocontrol, but the 701 has more features, and is just about the same price after you buy the remote for the audiocontrol piece. you'll want that too, b/c the piece is too big to realistically mount anywhere up front, and it's all but impossible to tune if you have to keep reaching back in the trunk.

plus the 701 is a lot more commonly used, so you will be able to get more help on using it than the AC piece.
