I already have a radio and speakers but im looking to upgrade and get a amp and sub, unfortunately i do not have alot of $, (about 150) give or take to play with. What should I get? I do not want Pyle as I have heard too many bad things about it, And I only really have one spot for a 10 or 12 inch sub that HAS to be free air (non enclosed).
I have a 76' Mark Twain with a 85 hp Mercury outboard motor with a brand new medium to large cycle battery.
Would I have to start my boat every half hour or less to make sure I dont run out of juice on the battery if I shut it off?
Thanks guys!

a free air sub only works if the back wave is isolated from the front wave. so there has to be some sort of enclosure or it won't do anything for you. the "enclosure" can be storage under a seat - anything so that you can't see both sides of the speaker at the same time.
turning your motor on once in a while to charge the battery isn't a bad idea - but it will take a while to get the battery fully charged (and the stereo should be off). the alternator on your motor isn't going to be that large, certainly not large enough to handle a high power stereo system and run the boat lights, etc. for my dad we did a 500 hundred watt system and he has a small 60Hp Evinrude outboard. His boat alt can only charge the battery when the system is low. I added a pair of 5W solar panels to keep his Optima Blue Top fully charged every day. he also watches his volt meter and makes sure it gets to 14V before it does any serious crankin'. he also loves to watch the sun set, drink a beer, and listen to tunes. typically his battery is drained a bit when he goes to bed. the solar panels recharge it before he gets off work the next day.
my advice - invest in some solar panels. watch your volt meter and make sure your battery (or batteries) stay charged. maybe get a small back-up starting battery just in-case.
as far as speakers and amps go - any good marine amp and sub is out of your price range. any poly cone sub with rubber surround should be sufficient, but there are only a limited number of true "free air" subs on the market, and they are also out of your price range. maybe look for something used, that way your money can go a lot farther. any amp will work as long as you keep it dry. you should try to keep marine amps dry as well.
pics of your boat and where you want to mount the sub will help us give you more ideas.
