I have a pretty big system in my boat that is pushing 2000 Watts and it's currently running on the boat batteries (hybrid deep cycle/starting marine). Due to gas prices, I find myself floating alot tied up with other boats with the engine off. Well, my batteries don't last long.... And being buzzed with topless dancing girls with no music is not cool...

So my goal for power is to be able to run my system for more than 10 hrs with the engine off. So I am thinking of building a dedicated deep cycle battery bank composed of 3 or 4 12V deep cycle batteries or golf cart batteries and wondering the best way to wire this. The amps are all located in a locked compartment. I am not worried about having the connections go to the alternators as I will be charging the battery bank after use with a three stage charger when I get home/dock.

So can I just run all the amps off the dedicated battery bank? Do I need to run a grounding wire from the battery bank to the engine block or can I just not ground the batteries?

10hrs is a long time without a recharge. You'd probably need at least 4 deep cycle batteries. It wouldn't hurt to have them able to charge off the alternator. What kind of boat and motors?

PS. I'm going to move this to the marine section...

I am fine with adding 4 or more deep cycles. It is a bowrider with 496HO single motor.

Does the battery bank need to be ground to the motor or can I run the system safely directly off the battery bank (which will be located in the compartment next to the amps)...

I would ground it to the motor and connect it to the alternator. You may need to get a HO alt to cover the extra capacity though. A good regulated battery charger is going to cost about as much as two of the batteries so be ready to pay for that too. Don't skimp there or you will kill those batteries in one season.

Just a little back ground... my friend has a 32' CrisCraft off-shore style boat and we did 4 Optima Bluetops in it. His advantage is that he has twin 454 motors so he could connect two batteries to each alt and have plenty of reserve left while running. He also uses two marine battery switches so he can disconnect two of the batteries from the rest of the system so they stay charged enough to start the motors. Then he runs the other two batteries on the interior lights and for the stereo. He is only running 800W but I don't remember ever having it turn off no matter how long we were out there.
