I decided to go all out and get my install up to par for the upcoming events. I figured I'd throw in a few new toys while the car was apart. Ignore the dates on the pics. I forgot to set the date on the camera. What can I say, I'm tired.
Pic of my trunk in the nude.
now in a sexy lingerie called B-Quiet.
 More sound deadening
 It's going everywhere
 The trunk completely deadened
One of my ace installers (my son)
My youngest installer looming wire. He's actually excited to get to work on the car every evening.
I even got my daughter involved in the fun of applying B-Quiet
Decided to carpet the spare tire well for a cleaner look
amp rack built and set in place to check fit.
Test fitting a baffle board with the old Alpine type E subs. These are being replaced with IDQ12V3 subs. The On Star module has got to find a new home.
Making a template for the filler panel
 And the other side too.
Mock up of the amp rack. It will have a cover.
Used an old emblem to get a template.
Which will be used to create the vent in the top of the amp rack cover.
Amp rack with the baffle board and new trunk floor.
Stuffed all the body cavities with acoustic foam.
Acura already filled everthing with this poly fill but I wanted more.
New toys for the car. Morel Elate 6 3 way. The dome mids will wait till next year when I go to modified class. More to come.

Progress has been slow the last couple of days. I did manage to get the amp rack cover made, and cut out the new baffle board.
The new baffle cut out and ready for finishing.
A little better view of the board.
The amp rack cover cut out and ready to be smoothed and covered. I have got to get a better router table and a some templates to save me the time of smoothing everything due to making the cuts free hand. More later.

A few more pics of the progress. Not as much as I wanted to get done, but I'm pleased with the way it's turning out.
Amp rack cover mostly trimmed out.
The whole trunk is starting to come together.
The amp rack cover vent again. I wanted something that would be interesting without spoiling the clean mostly stealth look. I think it's working.
The cut-out is covered with grill cloth so it can breathe and allow light to pass through if I decide to light the inside of the rack. I hope I can get a lot more done this weekend.

A few more pics of what's done. First up is the old door speaker mounting. It used a plastic spacer ring to hold the 6.5 And the old Infinity Kappa mid.
 The old Kappa tweeter
Everything was going good till we broke out the clay. Things got a little off track at that point.
The new Morel. Luckily I have really deep doors.
And the mid is now mounted in the door.
The inside of the amp rack. Still have some wiring clean up to do once I've nailed down which configuration I'll stick with. It's now running with the 350.4's bridged on the front to the tweeter, and the rear bridged to the mid. I will be replaceing the screws in the subs with black hardware.
You can't even tell there's a layer of B-quiet, and a layer of V-comp under the rear deck.
The DVA-9861 which replaced my 9887. I now have optical out
Also added a Dashmat. It's the signature series. I really like what it did to the stage.
That's about everything of interest. I haven't got a lot of listening time in on the whole setup yet. So far, I'm very pleased with how everything is working. The Infinity Kappa series actually did a very good job after lot's of EQ work. The Morel set has a much better Freq. response which is going to require a lot of changes in the EQ. I'm loving the Morel tweets so far. They are very smooth. The Kappa's were a touch too hot for my tastes. The detail I get with the Morel set is truly amazing. Thanks for looking and listening. We'll see what the judges think in a few weeks.

I'm going to HiFi Buys summer nationals in Nashville. I'm taking two weeks off from the car, then I'll have to get back on it to get ready for that one. I'm sure there will be some tough competition there since it's a money show.

I didn't see in the first page if you said this or not..
Are those IDmax's or Q's? I don't know enough physically to tell a difference. I ask because I'm doing a pair of idmax12's IB and I'd like to hear what you think about the setup if you have the same.
Nice work.

tuning session went great. the ride home was really great.
google idq. that thin metal is usually indicative of a stamped basket.
thicker baskets with the spokes usually aren't stamped, they're cast. i believe the max has the latter.

They are indeed the IDQ V3. I love the way they sound. I'm not sure how much of the improvement is from the IDQ's and how much is from the IB setup. I will put up more pics next week once everthing is cleaned up and all the finishing touches are in place.

It serves a couple of purposes. It helps to seal the speaker to the door, and insulate and deaden the door from the vibration of the speaker.

A few more pics of the finishing touches I've done on the amp rack and trunk. Gave the H701 a new look to blend with it's surroundings
Built the filler panels to make the trunk floor smooth and clean again. I still have to cover the factory panels in the new carpet so it blends a little better.

Changed Head Units again. The 9861 was not doing it's job, so it was fired and replaced with a W205. I had to make a dash kit for it using a single DIN dash kit because there are no double DIN kits available for my car. I learned how to do this from reading here and some How to articles in CA&E. It's not perfect, but for a first attempt, it'll work.

^Again hard work paid off. TtownCLS finished in 10th place at Deep South Nationals. This was a SQ only event in which everyone (from vehicles built by manufacturers and shops all the way down to Rookies who had never competed before)was placed in one class. 7 judges using their own CD's were utilized. He finished ahead of a number of very good vehicles.
Nice job.

The clay can be bought at craft stores like Hobby Lobby etc. Make sure you get the Non Hardening clay. It's not a replacement for MDF rings though. If you look through the Pics, you will see that I used MDF rings between the speaker and the door along with the clay. You can buy pre cut MDF rings if you can't cut them yourself. You really should use the MDF rings and definitely use more screws. Don't get me started on the lack of screws .

select products and Elemental designs both sell prefab made rings. The problem is they are prefab so whether or not they will 100% fit is the question. But get the measurements of your speakers and call them to find out.

Hey is that a screw on your subwoofer magnet? I had a feeling that was going to come up. Here's a word of advice for anyone getting ready for a show. If you remove the screws from the cover of your processor to give it a better look, make sure the screws are put back even if you attach it a different way. Make very sure those screws didn't end up stuck to your subwoofer magnet. In USACi Intro SQ division, most of your score is on install. A screw stuck to your sub magnet = big deductions. Don't ask me how I know this. I'm not telling. I know how you know, lol. Had you had the pics of your kids working on the car in your photo album it may have got you some bonus points though...

I bet you do know. I appreciate all the input you gave me. I'm working on the album now as well as the other items you pointed out. Got to make sure there are no more screws hiding in there anywhere . The kids were a big help, and I'm going to make sure they get their pictures in the album.

Haha. I'm glad i was able to help, can't wait to see all these great cars at the next show. I really do admire the fact your kids helped with the install! Having the whole family help with the project must make it so much more enjoyable. I can't wait til my kids get a bit older, you have inspired me to start working on my car and have the kids help out...

My favorite pic of the car.

2008 Rookie of the year 2008 State Champion 2008 World Champion Top ten at every top 30 round I attended.
I think it turned out pretty good. Just wait till you see it next year.

Congradulations on your results.
I wanted to ask you what your opinion is on the sound deadener you used (B-quiet). I'm thinking of purchasing some myself and wanted to hear an opinion from an audiophile like yourself

Thanks guys.
On the B-quiet. I am happy with it to the extent that it does the job well without having to stack it 4 layers thick. The B-quiet Ultimate is the only one I would use though. The Extreme version is paper thin and will require many layers to get the same results. The only problem I've encountered is it getting a little runny in the mid summer heat. I didn't put it on my roof. I do have it on my trunk lid and it hasn't turned loose. In fact none of it has ever loosend up and fell off. It's just messy when it's hot.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll be sure to look into other products, but B-quiet is an option I'm considering. As for the mess factor, I guess I'm lucky it's winter time then!

Thanks. What CD????? I went out and bought the entire album. Thanks for pointing that song out. It's now in my top 10 section of my CD case. Sad thing is I remember when that song first came out. <<<< getting old.
I won't say anything.
<<< will be old one day, too.
i don't think i had heard of steve winwood until you mentioned him robert...
opinions will vary, but he's one of my favorite artists. I have an MFSL disc of his: "Arc of a Diver" that is very good. Songs aren't as good to me, but the recordings are very good.
In fact, I've got a few MFSL discs that I really enjoy listening to. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_Fidelity_Sound_Lab
Robert, ever listened to The Alan Parsons Project? I'm figuring you have, but if you haven't you might want to check out some of their music.

Here are a few quick updates for the 2009 season. I decided to add a few more watts. Two more Zapco Reference amps.

I figured I should add a little kick in voltage close to the amps for the dynamic areas of the music. The Batcap 800 provides the extra capacity and high discharge rate to keep the sub and midbass amps up. The battery enclosure is sealed except for a fan that pulls air from the enclosure to the outside of the car to prevent the possibility of gas buildup inside the car. Note the fuse holder/meter for the second battery. That's also a fuse block below the battery for processors, lights, remote turn on's and fans.

Trim panels cover the battery enclosure and processors. Steve Cook of Audio X inc. in Florence AL. helped me get the trim panels to have a more finished look and added his logo to the battery cover.

I swapped the Alpine HU for a rare but amazing Denon DCT-1. It provides 8V balanced inputs to the zapco processors. Below the HU is a Zapco DRC, which allows quick adjustments to the processors.

The last addition for the season was the Incriminator Audio Flatlyne 12's. These things are friggin amazing. They add that extra detail in the sub bass region that is missing in so many car audio systems.

A little suede added to the interior to help finish the look

There will be more to come as the car gets it's finishing touches for the season.

Let me ask a silly question. Are those subs set up at IB? Every enclosure that I've seen has been sealed or has port of some sort. How does this enclosure work?

It is IB. It uses the trunk of the car as an enclosure of sorts. The trunk is sealed from the cabin, and vented to the outside to "appear" as an extemely large enclosure or an Infinite Baffle with no enclosure at all. This setup allows the sub to behave as it would with no coloration from an enclosure. A lot of subs need the air in an eclosure to help keep the sub under control. If you have a good enough sub, and an amp with enough damping factor, you can forget the enclosure and just use a baffle to seperate the front and rear of the speaker. It looks very easy, but requires a lot of attention to deadening, sealing the trunk from the cabin, and baffle construction, or the sound will be disappointing.

Ohok, got ya. It does look easy from the pictures, but I imagine that it takes a tremendous amount of work/knowledge.
Nice job on the install.

It depends. In one seat judging, it's a two-way with half of the 360.4's not used. In two seat, it's a 3 way with everything running full bore. Top secret info . If my plans continue, it will be changed again for next season with two Zapco 750.2's taking the place of the 360.4's. The Zapco 500.1's on the midbass/midrange drivers has got me hooked. Honestly, my car is better as a two-way system. It needs the kick panel mounted 5 1/4's to help the two seat results though. I'm the only person in the car 99% of the time, so it's run as a two way the majority of the time. Just another benefit of two DSP6's with 5 presets.
