This is the install thread for my 05 Accord. I'll try and hit the high points. If there's something you want to see more of, just let me know.

First off, here's the system diagram of what's going in. This has been recently updated from an Audison LRx 5.1k to three Alpine PDX 2.150's. Each speaker in the system, tweeters, mids, and subs, will get 150 watts each. This has proven to be more than enough power for my listennig needs, and can easily deliver the output that I want.

Due to where the deck has to be mounted, I can't use a flip face, and can't fit a double din. Since I wanted optical for the 701, I decided to provide that via a 6 disc changer. This freed me up to pretty much pick whatever Alpine deck I want. Since I do have all my cd's ripped at 320 on an ipod for daily listening, I chose the x001 deck. The controller for the 701 will just sit in the pocket underneath the deck, and won't be on display. The tweets will go in the a-pillars, mids in the doors, and subs IB firing through the ski hole in the back seat. I'll make posts as I gather pictures together.

First off is the deadening. About 100 square feet of Raammat BXT was used on the floor, trunk, and roof. Later, Second Skin Luxury Liner Pro was added to the floorboards. Everywhere else, Second Skin's Damplifier Pro was used.

Before:

After:

With ensolite (later replaced with luxury liner):

Roof:

Trunk:

The difference was night and day. On my way home from getting this done, I thought my windows were cracked open. It turned out the loudest source of wind noise was from the windows and windshield, and no longer from the floor. Adding the Luxury Liner Pro only made it that much quieter. You can whisper back and forth while doing 80mph on the interstate.

Next came wiring.

Here's the sanded spot for my ground block:

Ground block attached:

Ground block and bolts:

Sanded battery ground:

Tools used to crimp the 1/0 wires:

Upgraded engine and battery ground wires:

Now onto running wires in the cabin. Color coded zip ties:

All wires covered in techflexed, with corresponding zip tie colors:

Power - Red
Ground - Black
Remote - Blue
Ai-Net - Green
Optical - Orange
Speaker wires - yellow, gray, black, white.
RUX-C701 - black

Wires were run down the driver's and passenger's side of the hump, and up into the back seat:

Power wire secured to a Streetwires 1/0 Grommet before going through the floor under the car:

The power wire had a grommet everywhere it went through metal:

All wires were at least 6" apart

Under the car, the power wire went into a waterproof conduit up ito the engine bay. The opening was sealed with liquid gasket silicone:

Large, Military grade zip ties were used to anchor the conduit along the body of the car. I had a mechanic help me with this to ensure that everything that the conduit was anchored to wouldn't present any safety issues.

Here's pics from the doors being deadened. Each door has about 40 square feet of Second Skin Damplifier Pro on them.

Door with inner and outer layers deadened:

1/2" plywood covered in a layer of Damplifer Pro was used to cover the holes. The pieces were siliconed into place, then the seams were covered with more deadener:

Next, wooden spacer baffles were made to mount the Dynaudio 162 speakers into the doors. The baffle was made from mdf, then covered in resin to help with waterproofing. Threaded knife inserts were screwed into the mdf so the speakers could be bolted into place, and so the MDF holes don't wear out.

Speaker with inserts:

The baffle was lined with nonhardening modeling clay along the back to help decouple it from the door. I used 10-24 bolts with lock nuts to anchor the baffle to the door.

Excess clay was smoothed up around the edges of the baffle to further help with dampening:

A layer of deadner went around the inside of the mid and wrapped around the inside of the door to help prevent any clay from getting on the speaker:

A piece of aluminum ducting tape was put over the edge of the butyl to help keep the speaker clean:

Deadener went over the clay around the edges as well:

Pic of speaker installed. Everything was secured with stainless steel security bolts as an extra measure. This also includes the 701 processor, amp, distro blocks, and even the amp rack.

Female spade connectors were used to connect the speaker wires to the speakers. All the connectors were soldered onto the wire, then covered in heatshrink:

Wire prep sequence. Black is negative, Gray is positive. The tape was there just to hold the techflex back while I was soldering and prepping the ends. The tape was removed when it was time to cover the wires.

Finally, the wires connected to the speaker. The leads were zip tied to the basket to prevent them from coming off at any time in the door.

I have to give special recognition to Jeff Smith from Audio Designs of Atlanta, as well as his installer crew for this idea. In fact, most of the things you see that I did were inspired by the installs and techniques of others.

Thanks for the compliments guys. I got some help from some very experienced vets, Andy Jones, Kirk Proffitt, and David Hogan.

Anyways, here's a fun 'what if' scenario I ran through my head this afternoon after some crazy happenings over the weekend:

So, say hypothetically you had a box full of techflexed cables, and somehow a hammer crimper and a 10 pound hand sledge got thrown in there along with other stuff after a late night of working on the install. And say maybe weeks later when you pull the cables out to install them, the din cable for your 701 was to be damaged, and the ground wire gets pulled. If something ridiculous was to ever happen (b/c frankly I don't see how it could), here are some "ideas" on how to fix it.

First, you'd want to cut away the strain relief, as well as the excess plastic on the plug until you could find the ground point. It also helps to try and salvage as much of the distressed ground wire as you can:

Some solder and a piece of 16 gauge automotive wire would be PERFECT for rejoining the wires. You could even cut it a little long, solder onto the wire, then trim the ends when you're done.

Finally some 1" 3:1 heatshrink would work great for covering up the repair:

If done correctly, that 701 controller should fire right up when you're sitting in the front seat of your car, and you'll be able to make adjustments just about anywhere now.

Of course, that's IF anything like this was to ever happen, which I don't see how it possibly could...

ha, right. No, this is a hobby. I couldn't do it for a living. Trying to get mine done all but took the fun out of it for me. I just copied what others have done and went from there.

Everything is all but finished. I have to finish the fan rack for the amps, and I'd like to redo the tweeter pods b/c I don't like how they look. However, both of those are minor, and can be done inside air conditioned areas.

I've done three shows this year and finished second every time. First place has either been world champions or very close contenders.

Here's the finished trunk:

it's the angle of the picture. i had to trim down the factory spare wheel cover to make it fit. the wire has techflex on it, i just need to zip tie them.

however, i'm not doing install. i just do sqc in IASCA, and mainly for the MECA points. I'd have to go back and take a few more pictures to finish an IASCA install book. Right now I just don't care at all.

with all the extra money and effort that went into the wiring it would be kind of silly to not go for install. you have most of the technical stuff done it seems. just some fit and finish left?

i guess it's more important to get it sounding right then you can address the install details?

overall it's an outstanding job. very, very nice.

if you've seen andy's install and some of the others, i wouldn't do as well. when i started all this, i was going for iasca level install. then i realized that meca has a lot more shows, and there weren't many for iasca, and i switched. also, the rta in iasca scared me. they've taken rta out of iasca, but i haven't gotten a membership with them yet.

anyways, yes i could spend a saturday and get the trunk looking decent. i'd need some more techflex since my rca's aren't covered, but it's doable.

i need to finish the fan rack and also do some trim panels around the wall, but again, that's another day.

lol, bastard.

b/c it was after 1 am when i lined up and drilled the holes for the knife inserts and put them in. i didn't think about the terminals at the time until i had both sides done. thanks for reminding me.

i am going to go back and reroute the speaker wires under the baskets to make it look a little cleaner.

don't reroute the wires, rotate the baskets 30 degrees. make it right bro. If you leave the baskets the way they are it will look like you finished the install at 1am after a few days of late nights just to get it done for a show.

NO, that's the problem we have with shops .....they would go out of business being that anal about every detail. Most people don't have the need or desire for that level of install detail, really only competitors.

they're called zip tie anchors. the cheapest place you can get them is from http://www.mcmaster.com.

I used about 300 in my install, and need to use some more.
