Any info on portable hard drives would be appreciated. (not Ipods) How do they work and will they play Video on a Head Unit with a screen? I know nothing about them and it seems they are the way to go when it comes to video and music. Is this a correct statement? Thanks, ~Doug~

The Kenwood units with USB interfaces would be your best option.

I have an Iriver portable hard drive I use with my Kenwood KVT-719DVD vis the USB. I can navigate the files on the head unit and play music all from the touch screen. All I do is turn the Iriver on when I get in the car and that's the last thing I need to do - everything else is controllable from the Kenwood unit.
BE careful and check specs as not all Kenwood units have USB capability.
I have not tried playing video files from the Iriver so I can't comment on that.

i have a kenwood kvt 719 w/ usb and i tried buying a 160gb harddrive for it but i couldnt get it to work. It would power on but it wouldnt read the drive. So im not sure if they can do that and if they can than it must be a small size. I wouldnt waste my money on anything less than what an ipod can hold since the kenwood units can control an ipod and i have two 30 gigs. If anyone know how to configure a large usb powered harddrive to one of these radio please let me know

I didn't write this for this unit, but almost all the HDDs come formatted in NTFS file format. You almost always have to be in FAT32 while connected to something other than a computer.
Look in your manual. Bet it says FAT16/32 only somewhere.
The HDD has to be formatted to FAT 12,16, or 32. There is only one way to format a HDD larger than 32gb to FAT32 with XP or vista. Check out this site. http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm . It's legit and it worked well. Follow the Run > cmd directions very close. They're kinda tricky if you're like me and almost never use the cmd screen.

I'm curious how you are powering the external HDs? Using a plain 120V inverter?

Mmk, when it comes to playing video off of the drive on the screen, you're going to want a player (if you go that route) with a drag/drop folder hiearchy and not something like an iPod or a Zune where the software custom builds the file database and places the files in its own folders or just a straight up external HD. Next, the manual (read it online for a unit you think you may want) will generally specifiy that the drive supports FAT32, and a max # of files per folder, and a max # of folders. And lastly, depending on the build quality of the units USB stage, a 2.5" drive that doesn't require external power would probably be the easiest. Although, it all depends on the unit, and if you get a drive with the ability to be powered externally and the unit wont read it, then you will have to go through the hassle of buying a powered USB hub to supply the current.
