I am getting a Pioneer DEH-6900UB and I want to use a pretty big external hd so I can have all my music at my finger tips, but I am hearing you can only go up to 40gb for a hd, is this true? Could I go from the headunit and have a usb hub in my glovebox or something and have this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822161012 connected to it. If that would work that would be ideal.

check this out (he mentions a HD of 80GB): http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/top/cat/article/0,,2076_310069607_492822626,00.html

do you honestly need a 160GB HD? thats freakin' hUGE!! unless you like your music uncompressed, i personally wouldnt be able to fill 40GB let alone 160GB.

Most of my music is 320kbps mp3's and yea I need all that space if I want all my music on there. I am thinking it would work though...

there are limitations to the amount of space that most HU's will search for files. Unless the USB is 2.0 you will be hard pressed to use more than 32GB. Even with 2.0 the CPU may not search more than 80GB. The way they work is, they search all files and folders; then they load the playlists into flash memory. It can take a while to load all that.

I watched the other video up for it and the guy said "60, 80, 100gb whatever". So the 160 will probably work but it will be slower I presume.

don't take my advice, take my advice, I don't care. I'm sure you'll do whatever you want, and believe whatever makes you feel better, anyway. You asked, I told you.

I DJ during the summer at classic car shows and I use a laptop with a external 250GB hard drive (store all my music files there) connected with a 2.0 USB connection and that works fine. As for using large MP3 files (320). I have a 80gb IPOD and yesterday I did a comparison between a 320 MP3 music file and a standard Wav file and the wav file did sound better (was using a pair of Audio Techincia ATH-EW9 ear phones)..so I am going to change over to WAV files on my IPOD (I also use my IPOD in my car & truck...don't use CD's anymore)....should be able to get around 2300 songs in WAV format and use about 69GB.. I would say that some of the audio systems that are in cars and trucks now, factory or aftermarket, you can tell the difference between a MP3 file and a WAV file if you are a serious music listener (audiophile level). so having a large external HD to store WAV files is a must if your serious about how your music sounds....the only problem I could foresee using a large external HD in a mobile situation is if the USB port on a HU would be able to power a large HD via the USB port.....you might have to figure out how to install a power supply to drive the large external HD.....it is not always about the quanity of the music files it sometimes is about the quality of the music files............

soundhd i don't mean to be, well too condescendent, but in a moving car, say on the highway, can you tell the difference between 320kb mp3 and wav? I consider myself an avid listener of many types of music, and cannot tell the difference.

At 192kb at a computer with an average audio quality output onto either THX certified comp speakers or a few highly rated earbuds, I can tell the slightest bit of difference in the higher frequencies, but unless i'm switching back and forth between file types in winamp or iTunes I would guess wrong 50 % of the time.

Maybe you were born with a better set of tympanic membranes in your cochlea of your inner ear, but unless you're getting judged on the audio your putting on your iPod, that is time consuming and overkill in my opinion.

Oh, and sorry to call you out Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens style, but I want to hear responses from some of the other posters in the post.

Are you trying to make a fight to save high quality audio, or can you tell the difference in real world situations besides sitting in your car in your driveway or at a show without the engine on?

I will admittingly say I cannot and hope that integration of computer music and car stereo continues progress. At the same time if you are that certain in your rebuttal that you can. Then I apparently have set false standards of what I believe high quality car audio is (or music for the matter), and this none-the-less would deem the typical listener incompetant.
