9885 or 9887 has a better screen.
really the best for ipod is the alpine ida-x001. however, it doesn't have a cd player, so you'd need to get a cd changer if you wanted to play cd's.

no head unit will play the new nano or touch. Those will be out later, most likely after CES. They require the Apple Authentication chip, which has not been authorized for release by apple yet.

I do like the iDA-X001, I just wish the buttons and screen were reversed, with the screen on the drivers side. That way when you pressed the buttons, your hand wouldnt be blocking the screen at all. But anyways, my car's stock headunit has the tape player, display, and all the buttons in one unit, and underneath that is the CD player, and the eject CD button. It's like the CD player is a whole separate device that is just under the rest of it. Would I be able to use that as my CD player with the iDA-X001? The car is a '95 Camry, Idk if the CD connections have changed since then or anything like that. Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Also, I have a new 160gb classic, and I was unsure if it would work, but I read a thread over at ilounge.com that said they had the HU working perfectly with the classic.

The '95 Camry is a doubleDIN dash setup. You can mount any head unit in there. If it's SingleDIN you will need to purchase a pocket kit. You can use the factory brackets to mount your new HU. The harness is typical Toyota 10pin 6pin. That's one of the easiest cars to change the HU on.

Thank you very much. That is great to find out. Does that mean that the CD player that takes up the lower dinn is compatible with the Alpine HU?

no it isn't. That's actally a Fujitsu made CD player, for the Fujitsu made tape deck you have. It's only compatible with that tape deck, none others even made by Fujitsu. It's the predecessor of the current Eclipse-LAN. If you NEED a CD player, get the changer, Alpine's unit plays MP3 discs also, I'm pretty sure it's the only one that does.

from what I understand the X001 does not play the new Nano or Touch. There is a new aithentication chip that Apple hasn't released yet, so it may be awhile before the new units are compatible.

IMO The Alpine 9886 is the best one out there. It boasts the same Ipod connectivity as the 9883/9885 IDA-X001, but also has way more upgrade capability such as bluetooth, sat radio, etc. It also plays CD's and has a USB connection right out of the box. There were initially some issues with the unit not reading 5th gen Ipods that had more than 4,000 songs on them, but this problem has been fixed with the Ipod V1.3 software.

When I was recently looking at units, I ruled the x001 out pretty quick since like others said it does not have a CD player, but that's what the iPod is for and the audio portion of the unit is a little lacking. It has low volt pre-outs and pretty limited onboard eq control from what I read and messing with the unit in stores. There's other ways to get other features and have the iPod control, but your post sounds like iPod only.
The best iPod unit kinda depends on your other uses for the unit too. x001 would likely be one of the best being desinged by both alpine and apple, but theres pioneers and JVCs and other companies that focus on use with the iPod in the menu setup you recommended.
I'm sticking with the JVC KD-AVX44 or JVC KD-ADV49 for an all around unit for the time being. But unlike the Alpine the album artwork is not as quick. I would likely guess there's double din units that are better though if you want an all around unit with iPod playback that will play iPod video as well.

actually i don't know about sticking with the jvc kd-avx44 or adv49. I tried to use my 3gen iPod by connecting via USB (it only came with the firewire plug so I borrowed someone elses USB cable). Apparently it will only work with ipod photo, or 4g and newer for out of box usb hookup on the JVC. I think I've read around that it is the same for most of the other companies too. I get an access restricted message on my head unit which JVC says would likely be due to the unit not being compatible with my iPod. It would work if I'd buy the roughly $40 ks-pd100 iPod through JVC CD changer input adapter.
found on Victor JVC website. and found a cool iPod timeline on wikipedia that verified my iPod will not work.

I prefer the IDA-X001, I don't listen to the radio much, and hate burning CD's, and I bought an iPod specifically for car use. So it all works for me. It searches through 4000+ songs pretty quickly.

It has a touch screen so u can scroll through all ur playlists and genres, albums, songs, etc. It also show album artwork. I love this unit. U totally control the ipod with the HU. This HU also has a pretty damn good EQ. And buit in crossovers for all ur speakers. It has everything.. plays dvds, CDs, mp3, rear camera support, flip out, gps, Hd radio, sattelite radio, supports wallpapers, USB drives, u name it does it!!! They even have a tv tuner and Blue tooth for it as well

Well all of the alpine iDA-X*** units only have 2V pre-outs, which is the only real issue I have with them, and I was about to get the iDA-X100 but I think I might end up with a CDA-9886 because it has 4V pre-outs, CD player and full speed ipod connectivity and a better screen than the 9884.

the cda 9886 looks very nice...im running a 9856,and all i use is the ipod.i have had no problems at all....there are only 3 drawbacks. 1.only 1 line display 2.2v rca preouts 3.can't change lighting color
i also wish there were a way to go right to a certain letter in search mode...i have a 40g ipod with about 5000 songs on it,and if i wanna listen to say...metallica it takes about 2 minutes to scroll to the m's
ps....my 9856 works great with my ipodosouras.i have a 40g ipod...not video, not picutre, not even color.... over 5000 songs, and it doesn't even skip a beat!actually sometimes the ipod freezes when i am listening to it out of the car on headphones.but never when it is going through the headunit...oh and seeing your ipod say alpine on the screen is a nice touch too!!!!ipod in the car should always equal alpine...top quality!

Few days before, my friend bought a K3000ST Solar ipod speakers with battery / mains / solar powered options. Really quality one and suggest to those who are thinking to purchase ipod speaker, go through the site once before purchasing.
