I installed my sub and amp yesterday (it was a cheap ported box with built in amp, visionix)...and I let em hit a little bit in the garage didnt notice anything outa the ordinary, so I went to bed.

The next day, I open my car door and get in...and a smell smacks me. It is pretty strong. Like...the best I can describe it is chemical-ish. Like, it burned my nose. Like..bleach or ammonia in a way..i dunno....Anyway, I thought maybe I drilled the hole through my firewall in a bad spot, like..maybe it was freeon or anti-freeze or something, but I double checked and it looks fine, so I went and smelled inside one of the port holes, there is no doubt at all that this is where the smells is coming from.

So, I did some google searches and it sounds like two possible choices:

one: the new sub being broke in (i.e. burning glue and some sort of coated-finish on exterior)

or two: The voice coil \:\(

So, can someone describe the diffrence in these two smells or give some advice? Thanks. \:\)

the smells are the same, as it's glue burning off the voice coil.

the difference is it should be temporary if it's just break in. if it continues, and/or there's smoke, you're ruining your sub(s).

how are your gains, bass boost, and subsonic filter set? turn the gains and boost down, and set the filter to about 10Hz below what your box is tuned to.

if the smell stops, then you were cooking your sub.

I'm going with generic ported box not tuned for the sub, amp turned up, no subsonic filter = cooking voicecoils

unloading does, but if gains and boost are high, that'll overheat the voice coil.

If it is that strong, its probably not good. Usually only a faint smell when breaking in.
