Just got my Sirius unit hooked up today. Its wired into my DEH-P780MP head unit. But, from reading I was under the impression it would sound slightly better than regular FM, but not quite as good as CD SQ. After fooling with it a bit, I can't get it to sound much better. It sounds like mediocre internet streaming radio regardless of the settings I use. It sounded great in the store.
Am I doing something wrong? Something in the audio / function setup on the head unit maybe? I recall hearing 2 different friends of mine. One had XM, the other Sirius, I don't recall it sounding like this.
If thats the actual SQ, I guess I'm a bit disappointed.

Just wait till HD radio gets going some more.
*edit* PS Love the avatar. <---ex hockey player I asume your name refers to Sergei Fedorov. One of my all time fav. players. Actually from the people I know that have it I've talked to say it shouldn't sound as crappy as it does. Talked to 2 people now and had them listen to it. They said there is something wrong.
Thanks. And yeah, I'm from Minnesota, hockeys kind of borderline religeon here. Fedorov has been my fav player for years.

See my topic here
I really think this should be stickied or at least some facts on the streaming bit/sample rates they are using in satellite radio. It still seems a pretty popular conception.. case in point here, that satellite radio rivals c.d. quality. One of the largest contributions I could see this forum making in regards to satellite radio is giving people a heads up about the god awful quality before they pay to have all this crap purachased and installed. Especially!, after they have gotten a subscription and had to deal with getting it from xm but 1000x worse, trying to cancel it from xm and get your money back. So please for the love of god moderators, make a sticky of something in regards to all this.

If thats the actual SQ, I guess I'm a bit disappointed. Don't feel bad. My 07 Accord came with XM built in from the factory, and I agree it sounds like streaming RealAudio over the internet. After my free 90 day trial is over, I won't subscribe.

Maybe you should try tuning your stereo. Every input can require a different tune. Additionally, maybe you need better components. If it sounded better in the store, maybe they just had better equipment.
Who is it that keeps persuading people that satellite radio is of impressive sound quality?

Anytime you make any audio source sound in tune (guitar, piano, car stereo, home audio) you are trying to balance the frequencies so that they are all optimized. Any average Joe has the ability to listen for all of the frequencies however the average person that installs a stereo only attempts to create bass. Thats not in tune. If you provide a frequency range to each individual speaker that it is capable of handling meanwhile providing balance throughout all of the speakers you are in a sense "tuning" the sound that your entire system is producing. CDs require different tunes than FM radio and different than Sirius/XM. Many CDs themselves are recorded using much higher standards than other. These high quality CDs require less amplification of higher frequencies than CDs of lesser quality.

My point is that I installed my Sirius tuner a week ago and I am still optimizing how it sounds by playing with the crossovers, the settings on the receiver and the settings on the amp. I almost took it back at first. But after playing with all of the settings and slowly tweaking them...it sounds as good as just about any CD I own. It certainly sounds bettter than FM radio and sounds just as good as my Zune hooked up to the aux.

If your average consumer bought a 20 year old Sony deck that came from Walmart then that might be true. Most people have a slightly more modern deck that has more settings than just bass/treble.
If it is actually the reception of the signal thats the problem then that should be adressed. I do not think that I've ever heard of Sirius or XM sounding like "mediocre internet streaming". I'm not trying to give a false impression that XM/Sirius have incredible sound quality. But their potential is close to the average CD.
Assuming that FEDS 91 has good, quality, properly functioning equipment and he has everything hooked up correctly....either his expectations were way too high or he needs to figure out what is not adjusted properly.
